Vaughan Wildflower Meadow Sign
This sign commemorates the establishment of the Vaughan Wildflower Meadow in 1996.
Drummond's Phlox
Drummond's phlox is hard to grow in the alkaline soils of North Central Texas. It prefers the acidic soils in East Texas and can be seen along many rural roads in that part of the state. It was included in the seed mix so we are fortunate to see it blooming here.
Coreopsis
This pretty yellow coreopsis brightens up the meadow.
Basket Flower
This basket flower really puts on a show in the meadow. It really stands out from the other flowers with its fluffy pom-pom petals.
White Prickly Poppy
The white flowers of the prickly poppy add some bright spots to the meadow. A honeybee was busy taking nectar from this flower.
California Poppy and Oriental Poppy
These are not native to Texas, but sure do add plenty of color to the meadow.
Indian Blanket
Indian Blanket or Gaillardia pulchella is a prolific bloomer in the meadow.
Indian Blanket - All Red
This Indian Blanket grew as a mostly red flower. It has a hint of orange around the outside of the petals.
Mexican Hats
These natives bloom near the trail entrance.
Seeding the Meadow - Fall 2008
Students in the Vaughan Environmental Club just finished putting down new seed in the big meadow. They are thanking those who contributed the seed - Collin County Master Gardeners, Allen Garden Club, a local wholesale nursery and Texas Gardeners from Garden Web.
Meadow in Bloom
The VEC students pose in front of the meadow in full bloom, appreciating their efforts the previous fall.
New Fence
A local Boy Scout added 30 feet of split rail fence to protect the meadow from the mowers and also repaired the existing fence. This was done as part of his Eagle Project.
The Big Meadow
This is a view of the big meadow across from Vaughan Elementary. The outdoor classroom area can be seen at the far end of the meadow.
Wildflower area sign.
This sign was provided by Keep Allen Beautiful to mark the wildflower mini-meadow near the trail entrance.
Horse Mint
The pinkish purple haze over the meadow is all the horse mint in bloom.
Vaughan Nature Trail Entrance
This sign was built by a local Boy Scout as part of his Eagle Project to replace the original trail entrance sign that was stolen by vandals.
